Henotheism and Kathenotheism
Most of what passes for "polytheism"
actually falls under the heading of Henotheism
Henotheism is the worship of one god, while recognizing
the existence of other deities. The high god does not absolutely control
other gods, but rather is a sort of monarch or president, perhaps as a
reflection of the earthly social-political situation of that culture. This
god often becomes the personification of the national spirit of a nationalistic
people. Very similiar is Kathenotheism - the worship
of one god at a time.
