The Mental Body (Third Layer)

"The third aura body is the mental body. This body extends beyond the emotional and is composed of still finer substances, all of which are associated with thoughts and mental processes. This body usually appears as a bright yellow light radiating about the head and shoulders and extending around the whole body.  It expands and becomes brighter when its owner is concentrating on mental processes. It extends from three to eight inches (7.5 to 20 cm) from the body

The mental body is also a structured body.  It contains the structure of our ideas. This body is mostly yellow. Within this field can be seen thought forms. They appear to be blobs of varying brightness and form. These thought forms have additional colors superimposed on them, actually emanating from the emotional level.   The color represents the person's emotion that is connected to the thought form. The clearer and more well-formed the idea, the clearer and more well-formed is the thought form associated with that idea. We enhance these thought forms by focusing on the thoughts they represent.  Habitual thoughts become very powerful well-formed forces that then affect our lives.

This body has been the hardest for me to observe.  This may be partly caused by the fact that human beings are really just beginning todevelop the mental body and are just beginning to use their intellects in clear ways. For that reason we are very conscious of mental activity and consider ourselves an analytical society."

J. Ostrom		Lower Mental Auric Body	Yellow in colour, pertains to everday conscious thought. In those intellectually edeveloped it is a bright and wide band, 4 to 20 cm wide, especially in the region of the head.
Vajrayana - Vayus		Wind element Vayu	This is the vayu that supports gross conceptual thought.
Modern Hermetic and Astrological Elements		The Air Element	Also associated with the magickal instrument of the dagger, Tarot suite of swords, tattwa of air, etc
Hermetic Kabbalah Sefirot and Astrological Planet		Hod / Mercury alternatively - Air of Malkhut	One of the sefirot or magical archetypes. This is quite distinct from the traditional Judaic Kabbalistic conception of Hod. Air of Malkhut is also equally appropriate as this is still a mundane sphere of consciousness.
Chinese philosophy / cosmology		Water/ Winter	One of the five states of change, each associated with a season, colour, planet, organ, taste, emotion etc etc. Water represents the most yin element. It is associated with the Kidney point on the microcosmic orbit, and with the planet Mercury. This yin association agrees with the perspective of Rudolph Steiner, who sees "thinking" as pure astral idea but lacking in substance (the opposite of Will).
Gurdjieff/Ouspensky		Thinking / Intellectual Center	Described as a "center" - this is not the same as a chakra. Each center is in turn subdivided into moving, feeling, and thinking elements.
Sri Aurobindo - Integral Psychology		The Thinking Mental Being	Divided into three faculties - Pure thinking, Dynamic, and Externalising. Identified with the Ajna chakra.
C. G. Jung		Thinking faculty	One of the four ego-faculties - the opposite of Feeling. Not a subtle body as such
Da Free John		Third Stage of Life (Intellectual)	This is the Intellectual Stage, rather rigidly equated with the 14th to 21st years.
Ken Wilber		Body-Ego (Axial/Image) in part / Verbal-Membership / Mental-Egoic	Several of Wilber's ontogenic stages would be included here. The Typhon or Body Ego is when the mental faculties first develop. With the Verbal-Membership stage language and magical thinkinga ppears, and finally rational thought and mature intellect with the Mental-Egoic stages.
