Person - Planet - Cosmos
three hierarchical grades of organisation
The Person is the microcosm of the Planet as well as of the Cosmos
the Planet (Gaia) is like a huge person, or a microcosm of the universe
the Cosmos as a whole - according to the Greek Stoics - is a huge organism,
or in Ramanuja's Vedantic thought the Body of God
On every level of the universe there is organsiation.
So what qualifies an entity for personhood?
what defines a "person"?
In the West "person" comes from "persona" - as C.G. Jung explains the mask one puts on to interact with others
In Indian thought the person - purusha - is absolute consciousness - either the individual point of eternal consciousness or the Godhead
in Kabbalistic thought the partzuf is an aspect of the Divine personaliy
Between persona and purusha/partzuf there is a vast abyss of difference
yet both constitute different aspects of the person
I define person - or personality - as a unique evolving being
a human being is a person so is an animal, an AI (Artificial Intelligence), even a plant or an elemental spirit
anything with an individuality that distinguishes it from other entities
and the destiny of the persona/purusha is to continue to evolve to perfection
so that in the words of the English Theosophist and Buddhist Christmas Humphries
"even a blade of grass can attain buddhahood"

(he was purportedly quoting an earlier text but that is a bit controversial
never mind - it is the thought that counts ;-)
