In Hebrew and Greek, unlike English, each letter also represents a number. This opens the door to all sorts of esoteric exogesies. Numerological comparisons involving converting words to numbers, then looking for other words which have the same numerical meaning, are called Gematria in the Kabbalistic tradition. In not just Kabbalah but even Rabbinic (exoteric) Judaism gematria is a legitimate, and even highly valued, form of exegesis. Gematria has also been adopted by the gentile tradition of Qabalah stemming from the Golden Dawn.
