Central to Aurobindo’s philosophy and cosmology is the idea that man is a "transitional being", evolutionarily intermediate between the natural and the divine stages of existence.  According to Aurobindo, the Divine or Absolute Consciousness, descends down through the various stages of existence until it finally becomes inanimate Matter.  From there, evolution once again proceeds upwards through the stages of Life and Mind (which latter is the level attained by humankind) to the final culmination of Divine Supermind.  Here we have a grand cycle of involution and evolution, a sort of spiritual or metaphysical extension of Darwinian thinking, and a theme that is also central to the various Theosophical, Neo-Theosophical, Anthroposophical, and "New Age" cosmologies.
