Steiner's Moon evolutionary epoch

The following account of the "Moon Metamorphosis" is from Paul E. Chu's book Life before Birth - Life on Earth, Life after Death.

After a cosmic sleep period, a third planetary development takes place called Ancient Moon, or Moon epoch. From a unified body, a short repetition of the Saturn and Sun development takes place to prepare the plant-man to be able to take into itself a third member. A further condensation to water, or the liquid state, takes place and a higher etheric force, chemical or sound ether develops.

The next hierarchy towards man, the Spirits of Motion or Dynamies reach a point in their development where they are able to sacrifice of their substance to form man's astral body. "The Spirits of Form shape the astral body so that its whole organization can develop inner processes. These have the character of man's instincts." (Cosmic Memory p.199)

"Man consisted of warmth ether, air and water as his densest form and in the later stages, the skeleton of man was cartilaginous." (Cosmic Memory 205)

"The angelic hosts inhabit the human physical body and go through their humanity stage within the liquid state densifying as far as the cartilaginous."

The ancient Moon sphere was the size of the orbit of Mars around our sun. "Man is in a state of consciousness similar to that of dream-filled sleep. It is an image consciousness, symbolical expressions for the events in the dreamer's environment." (Cosmic Memory p.196) "At a certain point, the Moon splits off from the unified Sun and revolves around it so that man can develop at the slower rate on the remaining Moon body."

The developing astral body is inoculated with independence by the Spirits of Personality. In man's etheric body a kind of joy and pain develop and in his astral body, rage, hate, instincts, passions and so forth. The entity of man is animal-man."

"The Seraphim, in the later Moon epoch, gave man the possibility to develop spirit-self," the third member of higher man.

"In the Moon Epoch, the Spirits of Wisdom incorporate wisdom into the whole of creation. Wisdom is built into all the forces and currents which underlie every organ and cell in man, and into the animal and plant kingdoms as well. Ancient Moon is therefore known as the Cosmos of Wisdom." Therefore, we on earth find wisdom in all of creation, from the smallest to the largest.

At the end of the Moon epoch, everything is reunited in one mass and (the) sun and the remaining Moon body become one body. A cosmic sleep period (pralaya) follows." [Chu, pp.90-92]

Again, this curious cosmology only makes sense if we understand by "man" not the conventional human being but the primordial anthropos or purusha. Yet neither Steiner nor even one of his followers has been capable of making this small step and thus of moving his strange cosmology from the absurd to the persusively gnostic.
