The Setting

Journeyman Afar is set in the Milky Way Galaxy, an unknown number of millions of years in the future (the actual time-frame is unspecified)

While the galaxy as a whole represents a disparate meta-society of countless billions of seperate races, species, and empires, a diversity that makes even OA look mundane! (Because in OA the wormhole nexus limits diversity), in each particular star system diversity is more limited (because of isolation).

The Backdrop:

Orwood Forest of dyson trees. Each tree is hollow, thrives in the vacuum of space, and supports a population of tens of thousands of sophonts. Industrial, entertainment and arcology nodes glow red, orange and yellow

Millions of years from now, sophont beings have colonised the Galaxy, and Earth is but a dim memory. Orwood forests of dyson trees (left) seed the universe, supporting vast ecologies. Megastructures of every imaginable type abound, many predating recorded memory; A vast beamrider network links the civilized worlds with trade pacts so old they are inherited by each new civilization that rises to replace its predecessor. Matrioshka Brains house seemingly immortal godlike entities that are the goal of pilgrims who embark on multi-century-long quests. Out in the wilds nanoswarms, enigmatic transcends, and rogue autowars threaten the unwary explorer. Ancient races pass on teachings going back to the hoary mists of time, unexpected Vingularities frighten conservative civilizations, lo teks live alongside ultrateks, cyborg buddhas and augmented chionic masters teach age-old spiritual doctrines, while shamans and feng shui adepts maintain the spiritual equilibrium in the great orwood and biocolony ecologies, and cybersages pass on higher toposophic knowledge. The galaxy teems with biological, virtual, von neumannic, and nanecological life....and with barren wastes and no-go zones.
