Tony Fearnside
Tony was born in Bradford, an industrial city in Northern England, in 1934.
After school and national service he studied forestry at the University of Wales
(forestry offered an escape from the city but also encouraged him to learn about
trees).
He moved to South Australia in 1960 and onto Canberra in late 1965 where he
became involved in bushfire protection and the management of near-city forests.
He now lives in a Canberra suburb and appreciates the near natural parklands
where he exercises both himself and the family dog.
Tony has worked overseas, in Nepal, Rome and the Solomon Islands, with short
visits to several other countries, mainly in Asia and the Pacific.
Tony says that, "From 1994 onwards I have been an active member of the
Theosophical Society in Canberra and the people that I have met and my
professional contacts have helped me to develop my feelings for trees and the
land, and their desperate and ongoing need for better stewardship."
"Better stewardship requires an understanding of ecology in its widest sense and this can only be achieved if one is aware of spiritual connections with the environment."
